Step Four: Deciding to Follow Jesus

from Soul Connect

We have all traveled unique paths, each filled with its own challenges, victories, and setbacks. No one is exempt from making mistakes. The first crucial step toward positive change involves acknowledging these mistakes and understanding their impact on our lives and relationships with others and God.

This brings us to a critical element: the importance of setting clear intentions. Whether our goal is to improve our physical health, strengthen relationships, or deepen spiritual understanding, clarity in our objectives is vital. Why? Because intentions serve as a compass, guiding us toward our desired destination.

Christian Approach: The Principles of Repentance and Forgiveness

In the Christian tradition, this concept aligns closely with the teachings of repentance and forgiveness, symbolized by the cross of Christ. While the gospel is straightforward, its meaning runs deep. By submitting ourselves to God through faith in Jesus Christ and asking for the forgiveness of our sins, we adhere to a long-standing Biblical prescription for renewal. Various models for this process exist, such as Evangelism Explosion (EE), the Roman Road, and others. All emphasize the surrender of our flawed will to be redeemed by the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ. This often culminates in a heartfelt recitation of the “Sinner’s Prayer.”

After this act of submission to God, the Bible assures us that we are born again. This transformative experience ushers us into a grace-filled, redeemed relationship with God.

Reflection:

Consider the significance of deciding to follow Jesus. Reflect on the following questions:

  • What’s holding you back from committing to follow Jesus? What’s holding you back from rededicating your life to follow Jesus?
  • How would your life change if you decided to follow Him?
  • What challenges do you anticipate in making this decision?
  • In what sense do you need to keep deciding to follow Jesus?

Discussion:

Share your thoughts with your group or accountability partner. Discuss the factors influencing your decision to follow Jesus and any challenges you may face.

Application:

  • Spend time in prayer and self-reflection regarding your commitment to follow Jesus.
  • Consider the practical steps to align your life with His teachings.
  • Seek support from fellow believers to navigate the challenges that may arise.
